New credit unions regulator named

James O'Brien has been appointed Registrar of Credit Unions in the new Central Bank of Ireland.

Mr O'Brien, currently the Deputy Registrar of Credit Unions, will be responsible for regulation and supervision of the credit union sector in Ireland. He will take over from Head of Financial Regulation Matthew Elderfield, who is currently acting registrar.

Mr O'Brien joined the Central Bank in 1998 and worked as a senior bank examiner in the banking supervision department until his appointment as Deputy Registrar of Credit Unions in 2004.
