A report from an advisory group has made a number of recommendations aimed at encouraging more companies to engage in research and development (R&D) in Ireland.
The Advisory Council on Science, Technology and Innovation (ASC) identified three main barriers to research: a shortage of the right skills; high costs; and the relationship between business and higher education institutions.
It called for a greater involvement from industry in developing post-graduate programmes, while also urging support for the development of Masters programmes specific to certain industries.
The report also called for a review of tax incentives used in other countries to attract 'industrial R&D leaders' to work in Irish business. It also recommended that companies should be allowed the option to offset their R&D tax credit against payroll taxes such as PRSI.
The ASC said engaging with industry should be an important factor when considering the recruitment or promotion of staff in higher education bodies.
