Intel - Workers employed by contractor laid off

Over 100 workers who were employed by a contractor at the Intel site in Co Kildare have been laid off as the process of de-installing sections of the FAB 14 plant at the factory comes towards an end.

Intel announced last July the computer chip maker was to close one of its four Irish production facilities with the resulting loss of almost 300 jobs.

The closure of the facility was undertaken by a number of contractors including Mercury Engineering of Sandyford, Co Dublin who employed over 100 electricians and trades people to carry out some of the work.

A spokesperson for Intel confirmed this morning that the FAB 14 site has now effectively been stripped which is the principle reason for the lay-off of the workers.

Intel said the employment of the staff is a matter for the contractor but today's lay-offs would have been expected because this section of the company's contract with Intel has come to a conclusion.
