New car registrations in February 2010 were 39% higher than February 2009, the Society of the Irish Motor Industry said today. 12,306 new cars were registered last month.
While the nearly 40% rise in new car sales is compared to a very low base in 2009, the figures are still very positive, according to SIMI Director General Alan Nolan.
He said the scrappage scheme has stimulated overall business in the sector.
The latest figures bring the increase in new car registrations for the year to date to 17% above 2009 levels.
New light commercial vehicle registrations are surging even more than cars, with sales for February 73% up on 2009 and the year to date figures ahead by 42%.
This is the third month in a row that both new car and new light commercial vehicle registrations have increased, and 'it is a very strong sign that the industry has moved into recovery,' Nolan said.
