German producer prices, the cost of goods at the factory gate, rose 0.8% in January from December, official figures showed today.

This suggests that inflation is starting to pick up again in Europe's biggest economy. Analysts had forecast a rise of just 0.2% after producer prices dipped 0.1% in December.

On an annual basis, producer prices fell by 3.4% in January, the Destatis office said.

That compared with analyst forecasts for a 4% drop and followed declines of 5.2% in December and 5.9% in November, an indication that the trend lower is coming to an end.
