VHI Healthcare is to increase its prices by 8% from the start of February. The change will effect its 1.5 million customers.
VHI's chief executive Jimmy Tolan says demand for healthcare continues to increase and the company is facing losses of €80m for last year.
The 8% price rise will mean an extra €180 a year for a family of four and €90 for a single adult.
Mr Tolan said the sole purpose of the increase is to fund the healthcare needs of customers. While the cost of treatments has fallen, the number of procedures has risen by over 70% in five years.
VHI has lost 120,000 customers in the last year and is expected to report a deficit of €80m for last year.
The range of individual plan price increases is between 6-9.5%. But because of recent reductions, VHI says its price for a family of four is lower than this time last year.
