Tourism Ireland is to spend millions next year trying to attract visitors back to Ireland. The agency, which today launched its strategy for 2010, hopes to increase the number of tourists visiting this country next year by 3%.

There was a 12% drop in visitors to Ireland this year.

Tourism Ireland is aiming to attract an additional 230,000 visitors next year, which would bring the total of tourists coming to Ireland to 7.85 million in 2010.

Niall Gibbons, Tourism Ireland's CEO, says the industry is critical to our economic health.

All key markets are being targeted, with particular attention being given to Germany and Britain, which is the largest single market for tourism to the island of Ireland. About €13m will be invested in the UK in marketing next year.
