The number of redundancies was up 122% by the end of September when compared to the same period last year.

Figures released by the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment show that there have been 60,785 so far this year.

That equates to 320 redundancies per day for the first nine months of the year.

The figures show that 44% of the job losses came in manufacturing and construction, with 39% in the services industry. Females account for 32% of redundancies – a sign that the losses are spreading out across the economy.

The Irish Small & Medium Enterprises Association has called on the Government to implement a National Employment Strategy to tackle the growing problem of unemployment.

ISME's chief Executive Mark Fielding said: "While the Live Register figures reported earlier this week indicate a slowing down in numbers 'signing on', the latest redundancy figures confirm that we have a long way to go, as the curse of job losses is set to continue."
