46 jobs are being lost in Kilkenny city with the news that a printing works is to close.
Johnston Press, the UK based company which owns a number of provincial newspapers in Ireland, said printing at its facility in Kilkenny is to cease.
The company prints a number of titles at the location, including the Kilkenny People newspaper.
Staff have been told about the decision, which the company says was made following a detailed review of printing operations in Ireland.
Its printing operations at Limerick and Carn in Northern Ireland will now print the newspapers which had been printed in Kilkenny.
Johnston Press bought a number of titles in Ireland over the past decade as part of its expansion into the provincial newspapers sector here. The company says the operations in the Kilkenny printworks have been loss making for some time.
Negotiations are due to get underway regarding redundancy packages.
In a statement, Mayor of Kilkenny Malcolm Noonan said the cessation of printing of the Kilkenny People in Kilkenny breaks a 100-year tradition and displays a lack of commitment to the city.
