Probe will look at Anglo directors' role

An accountancy watchdog body has asked former Comptroller & Auditor General John Purcell to extend his investigation into issues surrounding Anglo Irish Bank.

Earlier this year, Mr Purcell was appointed as a special investigator by the Complaints Committee of the Chartered Accountants Regulatory Board (CARB). This body was set up by the Institute of Chartered Accountants to regulate its members. A majority of its members are non-accountants.

The body initially said Mr Purcell would look into issues surrounding directors' loans 'and other matters at Anglo Irish Bank' to see if there were breaches of ICAI rules by its members or member firms.

The CARB said today that Mr Purcell would also now look into the role, if any, of former Anglo Irish Bank chairman Sean Fitzpatrick, and/or former Anglo directors David Drumm and William McAteer 'in relation to the management of certain loans made to a number of senior personnel in Anglo in 2008.'

Mr Purcell had also been asked to investigate other issues, including controversial deposits made by Irish Life & Permanent through its subsidiary Irish Life Assurance with Anglo during 2008.
