Odlums job cuts - Cork mill to close

The Odlum Group is to cease operations at its mill in Cork city in late September, leading to the loss of 27 jobs.

Another six jobs will be lost as the company plans efficiencies at its mills in Dublin and Portarlington, the company added. €10m will be invested at these sites.

Odlums, which is owned by Origin Enterprises, said the decision to cut the jobs was due to increased competition as a result of excess milling capacity in the UK. This was exacerbated by the decline in the value of sterling against the euro.

The mill in Cork produces mainly for bakery and catering businesses and sales volumes are running below total milling capacity.

'Today's announcement, though regrettable, is an unavoidable and necessary step in adapting to the changed and increasingly challenging market environment,' commented managing director Joe Walsh.

'By taking this action to reduce capacity now, and through the achievement of greater efficiencies allied to investment in our other mills, we are putting Odlums on a sound footing,' he added.

Odlums said it was closing its milling and packaging operations in Sallins, Co Kildare with the loss of 26 jobs last October.
