There are fears for the future of 120 workers at the Meadow Meats factory in Co Laois today after a decision by the Dawn Group to merge the boning hall at the factory with another plant in Co Kilkenny.
Meadow Meats in Rathdowney is just one part of the Dawn meat processing group. The company employs more than 200 workers in Laois, but staff say they have been told the factory's boning and packing sections are to be closed.
Many of those affected say they have been offered redundancy payments or alternative employment at Dawn's operations in Kilkenny, but some staff members say moving location would be impossible for them.
In a statement, the Dawn group says it is amalgamating the boning work done in Laois with its plant in Grannagh, Co Waterford, where all existing staff will be offered employment.
