Aer Arann pay cuts, but jobs saved

Aer Arann has announced plans to cut pay for staff, but says it will not be making as many staff redundant as it had previously planned.

The Irish airline said last October it would be seeking up to 100 lay-offs as part of a cost-cutting programme. This figure was reduced to 70 after the opening of a new base on the Isle of Man.

Aer Arann now says it has limited the job losses to 60, due to the success of its cost-cutting measures. The airline said most of the job cuts were made before the end of last year.

But Aer Arann will cut salaries by an average of 7%, with executive and management salaries falling by 17%.

'While salary reductions are regrettable, they are happening across the airline industry and are part of a necessary rebalancing programme as we create a business structure that will allow us to preserve jobs and build for the future,' said chief executive Paul Schutz.
