Agilisys Contact Services is to close its call centre in Shannon, Co Clare and will transfer its operations to the UK.

The company has been based in Shannon for the last four years and employed 71 permanent staff.

In a statement, the company said it had informed the staff of its intention and hoped that some of them will relocate to its UK centres.

The CEO of the firm, Kay Andrews, said the decision had been driven by the current economic conditions. She said the strength of the euro against the pound meant that overhead costs in Shannon were proving to be uneconomic.

A spokesperson for the company said today that it was in consultation with the workers in relation to redundancies.

But there was better news for Ennis in Co Clare today. 20 jobs are to be created in the town with the opening of a new personal health and fitness company.

Ozone Health and Fitness Ltd said the jobs will be created over the next six weeks at their new centre in the Quin Road Business Park.

The centre will boast Clare's largest gym, seven purpose-built health suites and a multipurpose conference suite.
