Air engine firm warns on investment

Management at aircraft engine facility Lufthansa Technik Airmotive have warned that if staff do not accept a cost-cutting package by tomorrow, a $40m investment programme will not go ahead and 465 jobs will be at risk.

The aircraft engines currently maintained at the Rathcoole facility in Dublin will soon be obsolete.

The company's management had said they were prepared to invest $40m to develop a new maintenance line which would guarantee the future of the plant and its employees for the next 15 years.

But they will do so only if unions at the plant agree to flexibility and efficiency measures - though the company insists its proposals would not involve job josses or pay cuts.

The proposals were tabled by management yesterday after talks at the Labour Relations Commission concluded without agreement.
