US will 'stress test' big banks

US authorities have announced plans for 'stress tests' to be conducted on the financial situation at the country's major commercial banks.

Banking regulators said the tests were 'to determine if the largest US banks had enough capital to withstand the impact of the economic recession.

Banks with assets of at least $100 billion will be subject to the tests, which will be used to determine the need for new capital injections or other government aid under the rescue plan for struggling financial firms.
