Job losses - 121 voluntary redundancies sought

A total of 121 job losses have been announced at Bulmers in Ireland. The company is owned by C&C.

103 jobs are going at the Clonmel cider-making plant in Co Tipperary while another 11 are going at its operations in Dublin and seven jobs will be lost in the North.

The Clonmel plant has a total workforce of 433, while 46 are employed in Dublin and another 70 in the North.

Management told staff that the company will be seeking voluntary redundancies and said the cuts are due to the 'extraordinarily tough economic conditions'. It said it is essential that the company reduces its cost base and improves its competitiveness.

'We continue to be affected by very difficult trading conditions, compounded by continuing competitive pressures and falling market share in our key markets,' a statement said.

The company also announced a pay freeze for its existing staff and changes to their terms and conditions of employment.

Wicklow food plant to lose 70 jobs

Kerry Foods has told workers at its plant in Shillelagh, Co Wicklow, that it is seeking to cut 70 jobs.

The plant, which was built in the mid-1990s, makes meat products and currently employs 820 people.

Kerry said it has started talks with workers with a view to cutting staff numbers by 70, adding that it hoped to achieve this through voluntary lay-offs.

A spokesperson for Kerry Group said the move was due to current competitive conditions in the market and a slowdown in demand for its products.
