D4 Hotels row - Dunne & Brennan in Commercial Court

A legal battle between two high-profile figures over the ownership rights to the name of a Dublin hotel chain has been settled at the Commercial Court.

The court was told that the dispute between developer Sean Dunne and hotelier John Brennan over the name of D4 hotels has been resolved.

The row centred on the former Jury's Doyle hotel site in Dublin's Ballsbridge area which developer Sean Dunne bought during the property boom for more than €370m, a record land price at the time.

Mr Dunne re-opened the hotels under the management of prominent hotelier John Brennan. The hotel chain was renamed D4 Hotels. The business relationship between the two men ended last year and a legal battle over the hotel chain's name opened today in the court.

Mr Brennan, who runs the five-star Park Hotel in Kenmare, and Mr Dunne's Mountbrook homes were contesting ownership of the D4 Hotels.com internet domain name.

This afternoon Mr. Dunne began to give evidence in the case, but the hearing was dramatically adjourned to allow lawyers to have talks. Less than an hour later the court was told that both sides had agreed settlement terms. The court proceedings will be formally struck out tomorrow.
