SIPTU President Jack O'Connor has said the Government did not contact SIPTU on the question of reviewing or amending the National Wage Agreement.
He said that as far as he was aware SIPTU had received no communication from any Government department on the issue.
Mr O'Connor said SIPTU would be willing to engage in discussions on a strategic plan if it meant more money for workers but that prolonging the 11-month pay freeze in the Public Service would make no positive contribution to the economic crisis.
A Government statement last night said the question of a review of the national pay agreement did not arise at talks involving the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, and representatives from IBEC and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.
The statement said that, in his Dáil comments, yesterday, Mr Cowen clearly outlined the focus at the talks was on economic recovery and this was the sole purpose of his discussions.
