There are fears for the future of 100 jobs at the Flextronics plant in Limerick.

The company employs 290 people in the production of warehousing products. It is is embarking on a restructuring programme to cut its cost base as a result of the current economic downturn.

But it is understood that the core business of the company is solid and SIPTU is involved in talks to try and minimise the number of redundancies.

Meanwhile several hundred temporary workers at the giant Dell manufacturing plant in Limerick are being let go as the company comes to the end of its third quarter.

A spokeswoman for the company said Dell takes on temporary workers every three months as part of its cyclical business, depending on demand for its computer products.

While the company would not specify the numbers, it is understood that up to 500 workers are being let go as part of this quarter's cycle.

The company has made no decision on the future of its 3,000 permanent staff. The Limerick plant was the first manufacturing plant in the group outside the US,and manufacturers computers and laptops for export to Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Trade union officials and local politicians say they understand that staff at the plant were informed at lunchtime that it is to close with immediate effect.

The majority of the workers at the poultry processing factory are Brazilian and Polish nationals.

There has been no official statement from the company this evening.
