Bush push ahead of Senate plan vote

US Senate - Vote on revised package
US Senate - Vote on revised package

The White House says US President George Bush will talk to senators poised to vote on a financial bail-out package later tonight.

Spokesman Tony Fratto also pushed the US Congress to pass the plan this week.

'It's critically important that we approve legislation this week and limit further damage to our economy,' the spokesman said.

Senators were to vote later on a revised $700 billion Wall Street bail-out after the House of Representatives rejected the original package on Monday, sending shockwaves through global markets.

The surprise vote follows Bush's warnings that inaction could send the US economy into a deep recession.
