150 jobs are at risk at the Swissco company in Little Island in Cork, but there was better jobs news today from Co Louth and from a Galway-based firm.
In a brief statement this lunchtime, Swissco said that the Cork-based ready meals supplier had been unprofitable for a prolonged period of time and the only solution is to close the factory.
The company said it had become clear that it will not be able to secure sufficient business to make the factory viable.
It is now entering talks with the workforce about redundancies or relocating staff where possible.
Swissco, which opened in 1974, employs 154 full and part-time employees and is a part of International Cuisine Limited, a UK based ready meal supplier.
Meanwhile, 250 new jobs are to be created by a company which specialises in simulated driver training.
Sim2Learn, which has its headquarters in Galway, will invest more than €4m to open 30 new training centres nationwide.
And there was better jobs news for Co Louth, where the American financial services company Netezza is to create 65 jobs for graduates at a new European operations centre in Dundalk.
