Irish Nationwide has reiterated that it has received no takeover approach from Anglo Irish Bank.
The development follows speculation regarding the future ownership of the society.
The building society has not commented publicly on the matter. However, staff and management have been told Nationwide has not received any takeover approach from Anglo Irish Bank.
Last week it emerged that Anglo Irish had expressed an interest in buying Irish Nationwide.
The speculation followed a series of takeovers and mergers in Britain and the US amid turmoil in world financial markets.
