The results of a survey by small business group ISME show that its members are generally satisfied with their banks.

There was a 67% satisfaction rating for the bank among the 480 firms which took part in the survey, despite just over a fifth saying that banking services had deteriorated.

A fifth of companies also said they had been affected by new bank charges over the past 12 months. 60% of companies had queried their bank on charges or interest rates, with 43% claiming they received 'unsatisfactory' responses.

92% of the companies who responded used just three banks - Ulster Bank, AIB and Bank of Ireland. But there was an increase to 34% in the percentage of firms who believed there was adequate competition in the Irish market.

ISME chief executive Mark Fielding said that despite concerns, the relationship between banks and small business had 'thawed' over the past few years.

He said there was strong evidence that banks were starting to row back on lending facilities. 17% of firms who had a bank review in the last six months had their lending facilities reduced.
