Bottled water sales still flowing

A report says there was a 5.6% increase in the volume of soft drinks sold last year by the industry in Ireland.

Its representative body, the Beverage Council of Ireland, has published its first annual review. It says carbonated soft drinks, fruit juice and bottled water represent a combined 80% of the market.

Bottled water sales grew by 10% last year to €205m, just over a fifth of the market. The carbonated soft drinks category reversed a three-year trend, growing by 2.7%, with a shift to low calorie and no added sugar products.

Volumes for fruit juice, still and juice drinks grew by 6.6%. Sports and energy drinks recorded a 16% rise.

BCI chief executive Bernard Murphy said growth in some areas reflected healthier lifestyle choices among consumers.
