Bumper year for Jameson sales

Figures from drinks company Irish Distillers show that worldwide sales of Jameson whiskey rose by 15% in the year to June to 2.6 million cases. This was its best growth rate in the last decade.

The value of sales jumped by 21%, according to the company, which is owned by French group Pernod Ricard. Growth was particularly strong in the US (24%), Russia (36%) and Eastern Europe (37%).

The brand benefited from an increase of 30% in spending on marketing to €65m.

The company said the Irish market was slower and more competitive, with Jameson recording 'strong double-digit' percentage growth.

Among other brands, West Coast Cooler sales were up 15%. Irish Distillers said its wine brands - Jacob's Creek and Campo Viejo - performed 'ahead of the market', which it described as 'increasingly competitive and slowing'.
