The company that manages the electricity grid has warned that continued investment is needed if future demand for electricity is to be met.

Eirgrid has launched its annual report, which shows that electricity demand increased by 2.3% last year. The peak demand for 2007 happened on December 18.

10% of electricity is now generated from renewable sources, particularly wind. The Government target is that 33% of electricity should come from renewables by 2020, but Eirgrid chief executive Dermot Byrne says that level can be met only if the transmission network is significantly upgraded.
