Belgian-Brazilian brewing giant InBev has pledged not to close any of Anheuser-Busch's  breweries in the US if the US firm accepts a $46 billion (€30 billion) takeover offer.

InBev chief executive Carlos Britos gave the assurance during a conference call which outlined details of the bid.

After weeks of speculation, InBev came forward late last night with the offer in an attempt to create an unrivalled global brewing giant.

The announcement drew quick opposition in the US, where  Missouri's governor and a coalition of activists vowed to fight the takeover of the St Louis-based company.

InBev, whose brands include Stella Artois and Beck's, is offering $65 per share for Anheuser, the leading US brewer with 48.5% of the market. Anheuser, which makes Budweiser and Michelob, said its board of directors 'will evaluate the proposal carefully and in the context of all relevant factors, including Anheuser-Busch's long-term strategic plan,' and make a determination regarding the proposal in due course'.
