CRH has announced that Myles Lee will succeed Liam O'Mahony as chief executive designate when he retires at the end of the year.
Mr Lee is 55 and jointed CRH in 1982. A civil engineer, he was appointed general manager finance in 1988 and became the company's finance director in November 2003.
CRH also said today that Albert Manifold has been appointed group chief operating officer designate. He will take up his role and join the CRH board in January. Mr Manifold, 45, is an accountant and joined the company in 1998.
The company says that the new position of COO reflects a natural evolution of the organisational structure of CRH, giving its continuing growth and development of the group in the US, Western Europe and the emerging markets of Central and Eastern Europe and Asia.
