Increased postal deliveries as a result of the general election helped An Post to almost double its operating profits last year to €29m, compared to €14.7m in 2006.

The company's year-on-year profit margin almost doubled to 3.3% from 1.8% in 2006.

Turnover increased by 7%, or €57m, to €876m thanks to increased volumes of post and improved efficiency.

An Post said it grew its mail volumes by 5.3% last year. The company said it delivered mail to an additional 96,000 buildings during 2007, while the number of individual addresses receiving deliveries increased to 2.13 million.

Pre-tax profits fell from €96.6m to €49.4m, but the previous year's figures were boosted by the sell-offs of assets.
