American Airlines confirmed it has cancelled over 1,000 scheduled flights today because of tests it has had to conduct on wiring fitted to its MD-80 aircraft.
The cancellation of hundreds of flights by the carrier caused significant disruption to many travellers who had booked flights with the airline.
Officials said the airline was forced to cancel the flights so it could comply with a directive issued by the Federal Aviation Administration relating to the bundling of wires in the wheel well of its passenger jets.
American said it had assigned teams of employees to inspect the affected aircraft and ensure they were fully compliant with the US government directive and safe to operate.
The airline said customers who were disrupted by the cancelled flights could access American Airlines' website to apply for compensation.
The carrier's CEO said American was working hard to restore a full flight schedule as soon as possible.
American's latest flight cancellations come after the carrier had already cancelled hundreds of flights yesterday as it worked to inspect wire bundlings in aircraft wheel wells.
