208 workers employed at a Tesco distribution centre in Tallaght will have to relocate to other parts of the Tesco chain.

The news came when the company announced it was amalgamating the Tallaght warehousing operation with its new distribution facility in Donabate.

The company stressed that there would be no compulsory redundancies, adding that it is planning to recruit up to 1,000 new employees this year.

Tesco says up to half of the Tallaght staff could be accommodated at the Donabate site in north Co Dublin, while the remainder would be offered employment elsewhere in the company.

The move to Donabate will be completed by the end of May.

The company has already shut other Dublin warehouses in Walkinstown and Ballycoolin to consolidate operations in their Donabate facility, which opened last April.

Sources said they had not originally intended to move the Tallaght operation to Donabate.

However, a recent review found that moving to Donabate would provide a more efficient streamlined operation.

All ambient, non-food, household and beer and wine products will now be supplied to Tesco Ireland's stores from the Donabate Distribution Centre.

Sources stressed that the warehousing operation in Ballymun, which handles fresh produce and refrigerated goods, would not be affected.
