Pensions Board forces company to pay up

The High Court has ordered a construction company to pay more than €180,000 it owes to its employees' pension fund.

The Irish Pensions Board brought High Court proceedings against Limestone Construction Limited after it failed to pay contributions of €186,000 into a pension fund on behalf of almost 200 workers over a 14-month period.

It was the first case of its kind to be heard by the court.

The contributions owed to the pension fund are due from deductions from workers' pay and from employer's contributions.

Ms Justice Mary Laffoy ordered the company to pay the money within 14 days.

The company was not represented in court.

Chief Executive of the Pensions Board Brendan Kennedy said this was a very important case. He said deducting money from workers for pensions and not paying it over is a serious offence. He said the Board is investigating a number of other companies and could be back in court soon.
