US airline Delta is to offer voluntary retirement to 30,000 workers, more than half its staff of 55,000, as rising fuel costs continue to hurt the airline industry.

Delta, which has been unable to seal a merger with rival Northwest Airlines in recent weeks, also said it would look to cut 700 management and administration jobs.

Delta flies a number of routes from Dublin and Shannon to the US.
