The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal has recommended that Dublin solicitor Thomas Byrne be banned from practising law again - and will recommend to the President of the High Court that he is struck off from the Roll of Solicitors.
In a brief hearing this morning, the tribunal found that Mr Byrne, who is believed to owe at least €36m to a number of banks, is not fit to practise.
The Law Society had sought the ultimate sanction against Mr Byrne, who faced seven specific charges of misconduct at his legal practice in Walkinstown. These relate to Mr Byrne's failure to comply with a number of undertakings given to AIB, including his failure to protect the bank's security.
He has been suspended from practice since October 23 last when he gave an undertaking to the High Court to refrain from practising as a solicitor. The matter is expected to come before the President of the High Court in the coming weeks.
