140 workers at the ICT Europe telesales verification centre in Belmullet in Co Mayo were told last night that their jobs are safe. However, about 50 of the staff are to be put on a four-day week.
Details of the rationalisation programme were announced yesterday by the company's senior vice president Jan Jones who travelled from ICT's head office in the US to brief the workforce.
Staff at the plant said they were relieved and delighted that their jobs were secure as they had feared that much of the work being done in Belmullet would be transferred to sister plants in India and the Philippines.
Údarás na Gaeltachta board member Ian Mac Aindriu said the announcement was marvellous news for the workforce and for the town. He added that there was a great sense of relief in Belmullet last night.
