250 jobs are to be created in Shannon over the next five years following the decision of a leading US manufacturer of orthopaedic medical devices to locate at the Shannon Free Zone.
The announcement will mean an investment of €50m. The project, which was secured through negotiation with IDA Ireland and Shannon Development, received the go-ahead from the Cabinet this morning.
Zimmer Holdings Incorporated, based in Indiana in the US, is one of the world leaders in the manufacture and design of a number of orthopaedic knee and hip products.
It has decided to take advantage of the lower Irish tax regime by establishing a new medical technology facility at the Shannon Free Zone.
But there was bad news for those working at Shannon Community workshops. Their pottery workshops provided sheltered employment for 27 people with special needs, and full-time employment for 22. A decline in sales has forced them to decide to close in May after 40 years in business.
