Tighter rules to hit 100% mortgages

New figures show that 100% mortgages accounted for just over a quarter of mortgages taken out by first-time home buyers in the second half of 2007.

Independent broker Irish Mortgage Corporation said the 25.2% figure was up from 23.7% in the first half, but it was well down on the 35.1% figure recorded in the second half of 2006.

IMC added that it expected a significant decline in the popularity of 100% mortgages this year as many lenders had changed their qualifying criteria for such loans.

The broker said that generally, only first-time buyers with significant incomes, or who were employed in certain professions, could now avail of a 100% mortgage.
