Drinks group Britvic Ireland is to cut 60 jobs over the next year as it is closing its plant at Little Island, just outside Cork city.

Production at the plant will be transferred to its Dublin manufacturing facility. Britvic said it was planning to invest €7.6m to upgrade the Dublin facility.

Billy O'Regan, managing director of Britvic Ireland, said the job losses were regrettable, but were part of a package of measures to continue the company's growth and development in Ireland. He said existing production lines at the Cork plant would need heavy investment to meet future needs.

Britvic Ireland employs more than 900 staff at facilities in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Donegal and Belfast. It includes the soft drinks businesses, including Ballygowan, which it bought from C&C last year.
