Dublin car dealership facing cartel charges

A car dealership in Dublin has become the first in the country to face charges connected with a suspected price fixing cartel.

The charges were brought against Bursey Peppard Limited of 97 St Agnes Road, Crumlin Cross, Crumlin in Dublin 12 at a sitting of the District Court this morning. The case has been adjourned for six weeks.

Recently the Competition Authority carried out an investigation into the car sales industry. The DPP has already brought charges against one man accused of organising an alleged cartel. He is awaiting trial and is due to appear in court in March.

However, four charges connected with the case were today brought against Bursey Peppard Limited. Bursey Peppard runs a car sales showroom in Crumlin.

This morning Michael O'Donovan - on behalf of the DPP - told the District Court that four charges are being brought against the firm. He applied to have the case adjourned for six weeks to prepare the Book of Evidence.

David Keane JC - on behalf of Bursey Peppard - said he had no objection to the application.

The case is due for mention again on February 18. However, it is likely that further charges arising out of the investigation are likely to be brought forward in the meantime.
