A trawl of construction companies by the Revenue Commissioners yielded a total of €154m last year.
The figure is included in preliminary business figures published today.
The Revenue conducted 3,807 audits of construction firms in 2007, which saw building companies pay a total of €129m in interest, tax and penalties.
In addition, it conducted 40,000 assurance checks when documents indicated there could be unusual activity in certain transactions. These checks brought in a further €21m.
