British department store chain John Lewis has offered some cheer to the UK retail sector after it reported Christmas trading up 8% and said the January sales had got off to 'a fabulous start'.
The group said it rung up £70.2m through store tills over the Christmas week to December 29. John Lewis added that sales for the first sales week were up 4.6% on last year at £81.9m, as shoppers rushed for bargains.
The news comes in stark contrast to gloomy reports from other high street retailers such as Currys and PC World owner DSG International and Next.
MP3 players, cameras and photo frames were among those products to offer the most consistent growth from its department chain over Christmas, according to the firm.
