Irish exploration company Connemara Mining, which is listed on London's AIM market, says it has made a commercial grade zinc and lead find at its Monaster operation, which is around 10km outside Limerick city.
The discovery was made at the fourth drill hole from a five-hole programme on prospecting licence PL 2638 at the Monaster site.
The drilling programme is being operated by Teck Cominco Ireland, a subsidiary of the Canadian company Teck Cominco.
'This hole is exceptional by world zinc and Irish zinc discovery standards,' said Connemara chairman John Teeling. Mr Teeling warned, however, that one good hole does not make a mine and there was a long road ahead.
Teck Cominco has completed the current drilling programme and plans a follow-up drilling programme in 2008.
Connemara Mining holds 16 licences in the Limerick area and Teck Cominco can earn a 75% interest in 15 of these licences, including PL 2638, by spending $3m Canadian dollars by the end of December 2010.
