Tadhg O'Donoghue, the Chairman of the ESB, is to retire from the post on January 22, 2008.
Mr O'Donoghue, 67, has been chairman of the ESB for the past seven years.
'At age 67, I have concluded it is an appropriate time to retire,' Mr O'Donoghue said in a statement today.
'I wish the company well and retire in full confidence that it can face the future as a strong and vibrant vertically integrated utility,' he added.
