Gold price close to record high of $850

The price of gold breached $845 an ounce today to reach the highest level since 1980  and within touching distance of its all-time peak of $850 an ounce.

A weak dollar makes commodities priced in the US unit cheaper for buyers using stronger currencies.

The price of gold struck $845.84 an ounce on the London Bullion Market. It stood at $837 on Wednesday evening.

The gold move came as the dollar tumbled to a fresh historic low against the euro.
