Toyota overtakes Ford in October US sales

Japanese car maker Toyota overtook Ford in its home market, after reporting record October US sales the day after celebrating its 50th anniversary in the US.

Toyota reported its best ever sales of 197,592 vehicles in October as Ford's sales fell 9.5% to 195,462 vehicles.

But Ford still maintains the lead in year-to-date sales of 2.5 million vehicles compared with nearly 2.2 million vehicles at Toyota.

Toyota reported solid growth in most areas, with best ever sales reported in both the Toyota division, up 0.5% to 172,473, and the luxury Lexus division, up 0.6% at 25,119 vehicles.

Hybrid sales continue to be brisk, with monthly sales up 25% to 18,903 and year to date sales up 42% at 227,090.
