New figures from the Central Statistics Office show another decrease in the number of new vehicles licensed for the first time in September. A total of 6,677 new private cars were licensed last month, down 7.9% on the 7,250 licensed the same time last year.
The numbers of new cars licensed for the first time had also fallen in August.
However, the CSO says that a total of 171,407 new private cars were licensed in the first nine months of 2007, up 5% on the same time last year.
The figures also reveal that first licensing of second hand private cars increased by 1.1% in September and increased by 10.4% in the year to date. New goods licences decreased by 14.8% in September, and increased by 9.1% in the first nine months of the year compared to the same time last year.
Toyota continued to be the most popular brand of new car in September with 886 models sold last month. This was followed by Ford (830), Volkswagen (777), Open (545), Nissan (500) and Peugeot (246).
