Medical devices company Boston Scientific is planning to cut 2,300 jobs worldwide - about 13% of the workforce.
Boston Scientific employs 5,000 people in Ireland in Galway, Letterkenny, Clonmel, Cork and Tullamore. But it has said the 'vast majority' of the cuts will be in non-manufacturing areas, which are mostly in the US. A spokesperson said today that precise details of where the cuts would be made would be decided in the coming weeks, adding that the company had a 'strong commitment'to Ireland.
Earlier this year the company said it planned to sell the Tullamore plant as part of the sale of its fluid management business.
Boston Scientific has also reported net losses of $272m for the third quarter of the year on sales of just over $2 billion, almost unchanged compared with a year earlier.
The losses included $435m of once-off charges. When these were stripped out, net profit was $299m, ahead of expectations.
