Abbey saw summer Irish slowdown

The chairman of house builder Abbey has told shareholders that trading in the early months of its financial year is off to a good start with turnover running ahead of last year.

But Charles Gallagher said that in Ireland, seasonally strong trading in the spring slowed in the summer and 'is yet to significantly push ahead' this autumn.

He said that overall a 'satisfactory' year was in prospect, though the group would inevitably be influenced by any adverse economic conditions.

In July, Abbey reported a drop in profits for the year to the end of April, warning that higher interest rates were likely to affect its business.
