178 people are to lose their jobs at the Tyco electronics company based at Shannon, Co Clare. The company has decided to transfer its manufacturing to its sister companies based in India, Mexico, and China.
Tyco makes electronic components for export. It told workers of the job losses at a meeting this lunchtime. The decision comes after a strategic analysis of its operations.
Tyco has decided to streamline its manufacturing processes, and is transferring that section of its business to its companies based in India, China and Mexico. Just 20 workers, employed in research and development, will remain at the Shannon plant. Some of the workers would have been employed there for more than 20 years.
Tyco will engage in a consultation process with workers' representatives, but it expects the wind-down process to take place on a phased basis over the next two years.
